Korean (한국어/조선말, see below) is the official language of
South Korea and North Korea, as well as one of the two official languages in
China's Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. About 80 million people speak
Korean worldwide. For over a millennium, Koreans wrote with adapted Chinese
characters called hanja, complemented by phonetic systems like hyangchal,
gugyeol, and idu. In the 15th century, Sejong the Great commissioned
a national writing system called Hangeul, but it only came into
widespread use in the 20th century, because of the yangban aristocracy's
preference for hanja.

Teach Yourself Korean is the course for anyone who wants to progress quickly from the basics to understanding, speaking and writing Korean with confidence. Although aimed at those with no previous knowledge, it is equally suitable for anyone wishing to brush up existing knowledge for a holiday or business trip. Key structures and vocabulary are introduced in 14 thematic units progressing from introducing yourself and dealing with everyday situations to travelling and making complaints. The emphasis is on communication throughout with important language structures introduced through dialogues on the accompanying recording. The dialogues focus on real-life situations which feature authentic Korean as it is spoken on the street. The explanations draw comparisons with English to illustrate how Korean is both similar and different, rather than introducing a lot of grammatical terminology. There are plenty of exercises to practise the language as it is introduced and two review units to help the learner to monitor progress. The dialogues are given in the Korean script and a romanised version and a section at the back of the book gives English translations.

12. Korean
Spoken by nearly 70 million people not only within the Korean Peninsula
but also in five continents, Korean is one of a dozen major languages of
the world. Yet outside Korea it
is not as much studied as it should be, nor has it acquired commensurate
international recognition. With its difficult sound system, rich word
formation patterns, and complex sentence structures, Korean is one of
the most challenging to learn as a foreign language, yet there is little
that is written in English about
Korean. This book eminently fills this gap. The author presents Korean
in a lucid and readable manner covering topics from scripts to sounds,
from words to sentences, and from discourse to text analysis. It is
therefore both comprehensive and concise. It avoids unnecessary details
but includes all essential subjects, and describes them in a
well-organized theory-free prose. This book should be a handy reference
for both teachers and students of Korean, especially those abroad.

14. Selected Readings in Korean
The first advanced Korean reading text for non-native speakers, Selected
Readings in Korean consists of eighteen lessons on diverse, stimulating
topics such as Korean traditions, culture, and society. It is designed
for use by students who have completed the fourth-year level in Korean
(approximately five hundred class hours) or the equivalent. Each lesson
consists of six sections: pre-reading group activities, which not only
serve as a schema for efficient comprehension of the reading text to
follow, but also help students broaden their relevant knowledge; an
authentic main reading text on an informative and interesting topic;
explanations in Korean and English of words that may be unfamiliar to
students, including words indicating abstract or culture-specific
concepts; explanations of idiomatic expressions; extensive exercises
intended to help students master the contents of the text, new
vocabulary, and grammar while improving their composition and oral
presentation skills; and post-reading activities designed to further
thinking and group discussion on subjects related to the main topic of
the lesson. Appended are translations of the main reading texts of all
eighteen lessons and a Korean-English glossary. Overall, special effort
has been made to render the volume learner-centered and
learner-friendly.
15. Korean Reader for Chinese Characters
Korean Reader for Chinese Characters will help students of Korean master basic Chinese characters that are frequently encountered in everyday situations. More than five hundred characters are targeted in exercises that aid in the efficient study of the forms, meanings, and sounds of individual characters and their compounds. Although the primary goal of the Reader is recognition of basic Chinese characters, students are encouraged to learn to write them properly by inclusion of a section on stroke order. The Reader is also designed to reinforce skills in reading and writing in Korean while studying Chinese characters. Forty lessons are preceded by an introductory chapter on the principles of Chinese character formation and reading and writing characters and followed by appendices on stroke order, English translations of the main reading text of each lesson, and an index of characters. The lessons are organized into seven parts: new characters, reading text, glossary, notes, new words in characters, more words in characters, and exercises. After every fifth lesson, there is a section reviewing all the characters introduced in the preceding five lessons.
