18. The Roots of Old Chinese

The phonology, morphology and lexicon of late Zhou Chinese are examined in this volume. It is argued that a proper understanding of Old Chinese morphology is essential in correctly reconstructing the phonology. Based on evidence from word-families, modern dialects and related words in neighboring languages, Old Chinese words are claimed to consist of a monosyllabic root, to which a variety of derivational affixes attached. This made Old Chinese typologically more like modern languages such as Khmer, Gyarong or Atayal, than like Middle and modern Chinese, where only faint traces of the old morphology remain.

In the first part of the book, the author proposes improvements to Baxter's system of reconstruction, regarding complex initials and rhymes, and then reviews in great detail the Old Chinese affixal morphology. New proposals on phonology and morphology are integrated into a coherent reconstruction system.

The second part of the book consists of etymological studies of important lexical items in Old Chinese. The author demonstrates in particular the role of proportional analogy in the formation of the system of personal pronouns. Special attention is paid to contact phenomena between Chinese and neighboring languages, and — unlike most literature on Sino-Tibetan — the author identifies numerous Chinese loanwords into Tibeto-Burman.

The book, which contains a lengthy list of reconstructions, an index of characters and a general index, is intended for linguists and cultural historians, as well as advanced students.

19. Developing Chinese EFL Learners' Generic Competence

This work investigates the development of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ generic competence in reading, writing and translation within the particular Chinese classroom context. It provides a new perspective for the current teaching and research in reading, writing, translation within the EFL contexts and offers an insightful framework for pedagogical applications in language learning and teaching. Its findings will be extremely valuable not only in local situations, but also more generally in a wider regional and global context as well.

The book employs a series of research tools, including pre-research and post-research questionnaires, pre-test and post-test of reading/writing/translation, multi-faceted writing portfolios (including reflection reports), textual analysis and in-depth interviews. It involves 209 participants from a primary university in Wuhan, among whom 171 are undergraduates and 38 are postgraduates. And it draws on the analysis of such varied multi-sourced data both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Genre-based teaching is playing a critical role in initiating EFL learners into the discourse community of the target language. Developing EFL learners’ generic competence is viewed as the ultimate goal in the process of teaching and learning. This monograph effectively demonstrates that like genre-based English for Specific Purposes (ESP) pedagogies, it is also possible to take advantage of already acquired genre knowledge for use in EFL learning contexts. It offers an impressive view of the direction in which genre-based applications are likely to take in the coming years.

27. Grammatical Development of Chinese Among Non-Native Speakers: From a Processability Accoun

This book marks an exciting contribution to the development and application of Processability Theory. It offers the reader an extensive overview and a critical discussion of the existing research into processability procedural skills, from Germanic to Asian and Arabic languages.

It also develops a new perspective on the study of Chinese as a second language (CSL) acquisition, moving from theory to practice. The strength of this book lies not only in its innovative approach to CSL learning, but also in the potential practical applications of the approach to the development of the Chinese teaching syllabus and elicitation tasks. This research presented will benefit both learners and teachers. As a second language learner acquiring Chinese, this book will tell you how to facilitate the learning process in an easy and scientific way. As a teacher of Chinese, this book will help you to know what to teach, and how to teach it, and, importantly, will teach you how to understand learners' language processing from a practical point of view. The book affords a unique insight into the Chinese processability hierarchy which delineates the universal processing trajectory of CSL learners. The research design and data analysis procedures, which are presented and explained clearly and thoroughly, constitute an original contribution to the growing research into Chinese language acquisition, and will pave the wave for future research in the field. The book will be of considerable interest to linguists working in the field of Processability Theory and will be enjoyed by both CSL learners and their teachers.

28. Chaoyue: Advancing in Chinese: A Textbook for Intermediate and Preadvanced Students

Chaoyue: Advancing in Chinese covers the five Cs—communication, cultures, comparisons, connections, and communities—and follows three communicative modes in lesson design: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. The authors arrange their lessons around four topics intrinsically interesting to students: the self, schooling, social customs, and the global village, fostering a full appreciation of Chinese culture. Each lesson contains warm-up activities, mini-dialogues, authentic readings, conversational relays, a cultural unit, examples of sentence patterns, and a vocabulary list. Two review lessons are geared specifically toward synthesizing and reinforcing the language and culture skills taught throughout the book, and footnote glossaries assist in reading comprehension.

Written by experienced Chinese language instructors, Chaoyue helps students reach the preadvanced proficiency level within two semesters, or approximately 150 to 180 hours of course time. The preadvanced stage is comparable to a fourth-semester college Chinese course, or 250 hours of instruction. Unlike other language texts, Chaoyue is printed in both simplified and traditional Chinese characters, as well as the phonetic systems used in China ( pinyin) and Taiwan ( zhuyin fuhao). It also includes a CD-ROM with additional assignments and review as well as an online teacher manual.

Lesson sections include

•Warm-up activities that articulate the lesson's theme and activate students' prior knowledge
•Short readings in the form of letters, e-mails, reports, dialogues, stories, and interviews
•Dialogue practice with key vocabulary and sentence patterns
•Interactive activities such as surveys, debates, and small group discussions
•Conversational relays that ask pairs to complete mini-dialogues
•Authentic readings in the form of advertisements, Web sites, maps, and signs, with multiple-choice review questions
•Common expressions that relate to the lesson theme

Sprachtraining

39. The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Linguistics

The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Linguistics offers a broad and comprehensive coverage of the entire field from a multi-disciplinary perspective. All chapters are contributed by leading scholars in their respective areas.

This Handbook contains eight sections: history, languages and dialects, language contact, morphology, syntax, phonetics and phonology, socio-cultural aspects and neuro-psychological aspects. It provides not only a diachronic view of how languages evolve, but also a synchronic view of how languages in contact enrich each other by borrowing new words, calquing loan translation and even developing new syntactic structures. It also accompanies traditional linguistic studies of grammar and phonology with empirical evidence from psychology and neurocognitive sciences. In addition to research on the Chinese language and its major dialect groups, this handbook covers studies on sign languages and non-Chinese languages, such as the Austronesian languages spoken in Taiwan.

40. Middle Chinese – A Study in Historical Phonology

Published in the early part of this century, Bernhard Karlgren’s classic work Etudes sur la phonologie chinoise laid the foundation in western sinology for the scientific reconstruction of Chinese pronunciation. In this present study E.G. Pulleyblank gives the first full-scale review of Karlgren’s work, taking into account advances in knowledge over the past fifty years in both the history of the Chinese language and in general linguistic theory.

The introductory chapter gives a brief history of “Standard Chinese” and defines the author’s own phonological theory based on the concept of distinctive features. Pulleyblank then applies this theory to a detailed analysis of Pekingese, the dialect base for contemporary Chinese. He follows this with a reconstruction of Late Middle Chinese (LMC) which depends on a new interpretation of the Four Grades (si deng) of the rhyme tables. This interpretation provides the key to the correct phonological structure of LMC and to an understanding of subsequent developments.

Further chapters deal with the pre-Tang language, Early Middle Chinese (EMC). They contain a discussion of its sources as well as an actual reconstruction – one which departs in fundamental ways from the traditional Karlgren system. A comparison of both EMC and LMC with Karlgren’s “Ancient Chinese,” as he called the Qieyun language, is given in one of the appendices to the book. A second appendix gives a new reconstruction of Early Mandarin (EM) of the 13th and 14th century as presented in the Zhongyuan yin yun, a rhyme dictionary of the early 14th century.

This book constitutes the most comprehensive and challenging treatment of its subject since the pioneering work of Karlgren. It will be welcomed by specialists as an up-to-date and definitive statement of the views of one of the world’s leading sinologists.

45. Rapid Literacy in Chinese

This book teaches reading comprehension of 750 Chinese characters in a minimum amount of time. It starts from scratch – no prior knowlege of Chinese characters is assumed. Most other books are just lists and lists of Chinese characters, that apparently you must stare at a sufficiently long for them to sink in. This book, however, is from the source – the Beijing Chinese Institute. The method here to teach “Rapid Literacy in Chinese” is near perfect – and appears to be something new. Let me describe: There are 25 chapters. Each chapter introduces a single sentence containing 30 new letters. You memorize each sentence, and practice the reading sections in each chapter, getting extensive use with the 30 characters of that chapter. By the time you finish 25 chapters, you can read 750 Chinese characters near fluently. The 25 core sentences are also listed on 2 summary pages, and can be read through quickly for an entire review of the 750 characters (something you should want to do frequently). Additionally, the 750 characters are listed in alphabetical order on a page by themselves, for quick review. There is also an extensive dictionary of all terms and letter combinations learned in the many practice texts – the longest text being two full pages of Chinese containing all the letters you’ve been learning.
